To open before reading the Psalm, we talked about whether we felt “satisfied,” and generally most people did. When I asked if there were aspects of their daily life in which they are not “satisfied,” there were a lot of heads nodding. At one point, Chris mentioned that we can never be satisfied while here on earth because we are not with the Lord as we are drawn to be.
We talked about the overall themes of the Psalm, including that God is in control of everything, that He provides everything needed, and that all power rests in Him. God is described as the vault of the sky and light and fire and wind – we talked about the incredible mysteries of the vast universe, and how as each new revelation is opened to us, we can appreciate a little more just how amazing is God. Lincoln remarked about a scientist who saw that the incredible complexity of the universe can only be understood by seeing a creative force behind it, making it work.
Working together, each helping the other and fitting into the great machinery of the earth and the universe – these are all the parts that God has created and set in motion. Yet, as verse 15 shows us, He also cares enough to create the wine that makes us smile. Truly loving us, God gives wants to provide us gifts that bring pleasure. So in all that – can we be soothed about the ups and downs of life that might make us restless or dissatisfied, if we are confident that God is in control and has set in motion a fabric of life that works together perfectly, whether we see it or not? Are we satisfied to be dependent on God and so sure of our safety in Him that we can praise Him readily?
As in another recent Bible discussion, this series concludes each session with a song – we read the words as a poem of praise.
AS THE DEER
Marty Nystrom, 1984
As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longs after You
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship You.
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship You.
I want you more than gold or silver
Only You can satisfy
You alone are the real joy giver
And the apple of my eye.
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship You.
