John begins his gospel with a description of Jesus as the Word. He also argues proof that Jesus was the Son of God in the witness of John the Baptist. John used the word “witness” repeatedly in his gospel, suggesting it is a concept of importance. In our discussion, we talked about the value of being able to meet God face to face, and learn from Him personally, through His Son walking on earth. And although Jesus is long dead, resurrected, and back with the Father, we also talked about the witnesses that we are when we encounter our Lord in Holy Communion, and when we let the Holy Spirit bring us into the Lord’s arms through services and other experiences.
Tonight’s passage includes John’s statement that many in the world would look at Jesus and not see Him as the Son of God. We discussed that a little, looking at it in context of the Jewish people, who are still waiting for Messiah, and from a modern standpoint of people just not interested in God, or believing at all. Fortunately, God’s plan includes 1,000 years of testimony – witnessing – to everyone, in the future.
The spiritual theme for the year is acknowledging God’s glory, and one of the key topics in tonight’s passage was the glory of God, seen in the majesty of creation, the awesomeness of the universe, and the power of light over darkness. John seems to be trying to impress upon us that the ultimate proof of God’s glory is not the power, however, but the willingness to lay aside that power and come be with us as we are: as the man Jesus. Several people shared moments and experiences when they perceived that God’s glory was being shown – we can all benefit from letting our perspectives shift to have that insight for the things happening around us.
