Tonight’s discussion focused on evil, and Christ’s domination of evil through His sacrifice on the cross. Much of the conversation revolved around the prevalence of evil in the world, and even the appearance of Christianity diminishing as cruelty and evil seem to be increasing; we talked about how much of that is true, versus the impressions we have because media tends to report on the negative. Bad impressions and misdirection (covert manipulation of our weaknesses) were discussed as ways Satan makes us most vulnerable to straying from the teachings and guidance of Jesus. Even more treacherous can be cultural practices and traditions that come to be like truth to us, when in fact they are human-generated ideas. The solution to being led astray is to tune into Jesus – in fact, we described it like tuning in a station on the radio, often being just a little off so that the music is faint with static. We need to keep fine-tuning our perceptions of what is happening around us by connecting as clearly as we can to how Jesus would want us to understand things and respond to them.
In the scripture from Colossians, Paul makes the point that Jesus forgave our sins, then cancelled the legal debt for our sins, and finally, publicly exposed His power by His triumph on the cross. So, He not only took care of our personal salvation, He also faced off and defeated evil. We talked about how Jesus’ power over evil should make us feel, and we can state our belief that in the “end,” Jesus wins. However, in a world with so much evil we often give in a little to despair, when we could run to Jesus in confidence. He defeated evil, and with His help, we can too, a day and an incident at a time.
