Tonight’s discussion included some great imagery for the body Christ. The parts of a body are all fed by the blood’s circulation, which flows out of the heart and then back in. In the Body of Christ, think of the blood as Love, Christ’s love circulating through all the parts of the body, nourishing, protecting, smothering germs, clotting – everything blood does as it keeps a body alive. That’s love, the blood of Christ’s body.
We talked about how to mature away from old NAC traditions where ministers did almost everything, and members mostly ingested the Word. We also considered how to motivate and encourage members to let the Holy Spirit mobilize them and their gifts. The skill of waiting, to help and encourage and work even if no results are seen, was a big topic, along with the need for patience to allow all members to have a chance to share their skills.
Dorothy shared an experience of moving from one congregation – full of warm, welcoming members – to another congregation where the members seemed cold and distant. Her husband’s advice for coping with this frosty atmosphere? “Show them how to be warm” – and that’s what she did!
