Tonight in the video, Priscilla described the special lights used by TSA to authenticate identification as like the light of God’s word in scripture verifying what we do and say as in accord with God. She spent much of her presentation on the deceptive tricks of Satan, which cannot be discerned by us alone. We need the truth of scripture as a standard. She also spoke quite a bit about the use of the belt (God’s truth) to tuck away the folds of the tunic (our ideas and failings) so that we are free to move – like people in that time tucking in the bottoms of their garment when they had to run or lift or fight. She included a great quote from Charles Spurgeon: Discernment is not a matter of simply telling the difference between what is right and wrong; rather it is the difference between right and almost right.
Here are some reading and questions to contemplate for this week’s “homework.”
For a picture of a warrior with which Paul was familiar when he wrote to the Ephesians, read Isaiah 59:14-20.
For some thoughts on where we find truth, read Psalm 119:160, John 8:31-32, and Ephesians 4:20-24.
The belt or girdle of truth supports and strengthens our spiritual core, like a lumbar support helps our physical core. Check the condition of your spiritual core through your posture, injury sensitivity, and fatigue level.
• Standing upright with good posture? Or sagging under a heavy load?
When do you find it particularly hard to keep your spiritual backbone: under pressure to conform, when put on the spot to defend your faith, carrying extra weight of difficulties, or are there other factors?
• Hard to hurt because you are confident in God’s love? Or prone to be injured by words or actions of others?
On a scale of 1 to 5, (5 being most or strongest) decide how easily you:
Feel injured and wounded by the words of others 1 2 3 4 5
Forgive and get over past hurts, put them behind you, and move forward 1 2 3 4 5
Make other people feel comfortable around you, not needing to tiptoe for fear of hurting you 1 2 3 4 5
Let the sun go down on your anger? 1 2 3 4 5
• Strength flowing from your core to keep you working? Or is your energy leeching out?
From the adjectives below, choose which word or two describes how you feel when you are engaged in these areas of your life: Work; Family; Ministry; Hobbies.
tired energized motivated drained insecure hopeful fulfilled inspired discouraged self-conscious attentive flexible bored frightened capable happy
On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being most or highest), rate yourself in each area below on how much you depend on these factors for guidance in making a life decision.
Feelings 1 2 3 4 5 Intelligence 1 2 3 4 5 Instinct 1 2 3 4 5 Past Experience 1 2 3 4 5
When you used these tools to guide a decision, did you use anything else to corroborate them? What or whom?
Read Numbers 20:7-12. What was the Lord’s instruction? What portion did Moses follow, and which did he choose not to obey? What might have been Moses’ rationale for his decision?
