Turns out a few people did the homework from last week, and it opened up their thoughts for tonight - we did not discuss last week's homework, however.
The Session 3 video focused primarily on how to achieve righteousness, which was defined as “upright living that aligns with God’s expectations.” That made much sense to us, as did her further push for letting the Holy Spirit do work in us to transform us into Christ’s image. She compared it to the story of a sculptor who was asked how he was able to sculpt a glorious stallion from a block of stone – to which he replied that he mere chipped away anything that wasn’t the stallion. We agree that the Holy Spirit can chip away behavior and attitudes that are not Godly – in discussion, we mentioned that letting the Holy Spirit work on us is a choice we make, not something He does to us.
Here is some further reading and exercises to follow up from tonight's session.
Can we take on God’s righteousness? Read Isaiah 64:6 and Romans 3:23.
Read 1 Kings 24 (the whole chapter is 22 verses). What was Saul’s response to what David did (verse 16)? How did Saul measure his own level of righteousness (verse 17)?
Open a Bible to Ephesians 4, where Paul gives some specific instructions on what to PUT OFF and what (as part of the breastplate) to PUT ON.
From the following verses in Ephesians 4 make a list of behaviors Paul tells us to put off
4:25
4:26
4:28
4:29
4:31
Which are attributes in Paul’s list that you struggle with? What comfort or benefit do they give you that makes it difficult for you to part with them? What would be a first step you could take to put them off?
Use these verses in Ephesians 4 to make a list of virtues Paul tells us to put on
4:2-3
4:25
4:32
Which of the virtues you listed are the difficult for you to put on? What current relationships and circumstances make this most difficult right now?
